Most eBike failures fall into a short list. After a few years of driveway calls across North County, these are the ten problems we see the most, what causes them, what you can safely check yourself, and the point where you should stop and get a mechanic involved.

Symptoms: soft or dead tire, rim sitting on the ground, repeated slow leaks over days.
Causes: goatheads and thorns, glass, low pressure pinch flats, worn tires, or a burr inside the rim.
What you can check: pressure against the number printed on the sidewall, the tread for embedded debris, and whether the leak is fast or slow.
Stop and call when: the flat is on a rear hub motor wheel and you are not comfortable disconnecting the motor cable and torque arm, or when the same tire keeps going flat.

Symptoms: longer stopping distance, lever pulling closer to the bar, a gritty feel under braking.
Causes: eBikes are heavy and fast, so pads wear much faster than on an analog bike. Coastal grit speeds it up.
What you can check: pad thickness through the caliper. If the friction material looks paper thin, it is done.
Stop and call when: you are into the backing plate, the rotor is scored or blue, or the lever pulls to the bar. Brakes are not the place to experiment.

Symptoms: squeal on light braking, a rhythmic rub while rolling, or a howl when wet.
Causes: contaminated pads, a slightly bent rotor, misaligned caliper, or glazing from long descents.
What you can check: whether the noise is constant or only under braking, and whether the wheel is fully seated in the dropouts.
Stop and call when: cleaning the rotor does not help, or the pads have been touched by chain lube or degreaser. Contaminated pads get replaced, not cleaned.
Symptoms: shorter range than usual, charge that drops fast under load, a pack that will not take a charge, or a charger light that never turns green.
Causes: age and cycle count, cold or hot storage, a failed charger, corroded contacts, or a BMS fault.
What you can check: that the charger is plugged in and its light behaves normally, that the pack is seated and locked, and that the contacts are clean and dry. Nothing more.
Never do this: do not open a battery case, puncture cells, bypass the BMS, charge a swollen or damaged pack, or test cells with improvised leads. Damaged lithium ion packs are a fire risk. Read our battery safety page.
Stop and call when: the pack is swollen, hot, smells odd, or simply will not charge. Related: battery replacement and battery care habits.
Symptoms: blank display, no lights, no response from the power button.
Causes: a discharged or unseated battery, a battery cutoff switch left off, a loose main harness connector, a dead display, or a controller fault.
What you can check: charge level, battery seating, the physical on and off switch on the pack, and any obvious pinched or chewed wiring.

Stop and call when: the battery is charged and seated and the bike is still dark. That points at the controller, the harness, or the pack internals, all of which need proper diagnostics.
Symptoms: intermittent power cutouts, one assist level that does not work, error codes on the display, or power that quits once the bike gets hot.
Causes: water intrusion, vibration damage at the connectors, heat, or a genuinely failed controller.
What you can check: the display error code and whether the fault repeats in a pattern (only at high assist, only when warm, only over bumps). Write it down. That pattern is half the diagnosis.
Stop and call when: the fault is intermittent. Guess replacing a controller is expensive. Related: electrical diagnostics and controller troubleshooting.
Symptoms: throttle does nothing, works only sometimes, or sticks on.
Causes: a disconnected or corroded throttle plug, a failed hall sensor in the throttle unit, a brake cutoff sensor stuck engaged, or a settings change in the display menu.
What you can check: whether pedal assist still works (if it does, the motor and controller are probably fine), whether the brake levers are fully released, and whether the throttle connector is seated.
Stop and call when: the throttle sticks on. That is a safety issue. Stop riding and get it looked at.
Symptoms: assist that does not engage, cuts in late, surges, or only works in some levels.
Causes: a misaligned cadence sensor or magnet disc, a torque sensor fault, a loose sensor cable, or an assist setting that got changed.
What you can check: the gap and alignment of the cadence sensor against its magnet ring, and your display settings.
Stop and call when: alignment looks right and assist still misbehaves. Related: pedal assist not working.
Symptoms: grinding, clicking, whining that changes with load, or a knock under acceleration.
Causes: worn motor bearings, stripped nylon planetary gears in a geared hub, a loose spoke or axle nut, or debris in the drivetrain being blamed on the motor.
What you can check: whether the noise happens with the motor off while coasting (usually drivetrain or bearings) or only under power (usually motor internals).
Stop and call when: you hear grinding under power, or the noise gets worse week to week. Related: motor repair and what eBike motor noises mean.
This one is local. Riding the coast from Oceanside through Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Del Mar puts salt air and fine sand into everything. We see rusted chains at low mileage, seized cables, pitted rotors, corroded battery contacts, and green crust inside connectors on bikes that are otherwise nearly new.
What you can check: chain and cable condition, battery contacts, and bolt heads for early rust.
What helps: rinse gently with fresh water after beach rides, dry the bike, keep the chain clean and lubed, store indoors, and keep the battery contacts dry. Avoid pressure washers, which push water straight past seals and into bearings and connectors.
Stop and call when: cables are seized, connectors are corroded, or shifting and braking have gone rough. Related: coastal salt air care and eBike tune-up.

Flat tires, by a wide margin. Brake wear is second. Most of what we get called out for is normal wear on a heavy bike, not electrical failure.
A full tune-up about every six months for regular riders, or sooner if you ride daily, ride the coast, or ride in wet conditions. Check tire pressure and brakes far more often than that.
Usually yes, but it pedals like a very heavy bicycle. There is no harm in riding home unassisted as long as the brakes and drivetrain are working normally.
Common causes include a loose battery in the mount, a dirty or damaged connector, an overheating controller, or a failing hall sensor in the motor. Intermittent cutouts should be diagnosed rather than ridden through.
Yes. Coastal moisture accelerates rust on chains, cables, rotors, and fasteners, and corrodes battery contacts and connectors. Rinsing lightly with fresh water, drying, and lubing the chain makes a real difference.
