eBike Battery Care: 7 Habits That Double Your Battery's Lifespan

MaintenanceJanuary 29, 20265 min read

Simple charging and storage habits that can extend your eBike battery from 3 years to 6+ years. Real advice from a mobile eBike mechanic.

An eBike battery costs $400–$900 to replace. The good news: with a little care, you can dramatically extend its life. Here's what we tell every customer.

1. Don't store it at 100%

Lithium batteries hate being stored full. If you're not riding for more than a few days, charge to ~60–80% and unplug.

2. Never store it empty

The opposite is also true. Storing a battery below 20% for weeks can cause permanent capacity loss. Top it up before storage.

3. Charge in moderate temperatures

Charging in a hot garage (>95°F) or a freezing one (<40°F) damages the cells. Bring the battery inside.

4. Use the original charger

Aftermarket chargers can deliver the wrong voltage or current. Stick with the OEM charger that came with your bike.

5. Don't leave it on the charger for days

Modern chargers shut off, but heat from being plugged in continuously still degrades cells over time. Unplug when full.

6. Clean the contacts

Salty coastal air corrodes battery contacts. Wipe them down monthly with a dry cloth - never water.

7. Get a yearly battery health check

We offer a battery diagnostic that tests actual capacity vs. rated capacity. If it's drifting, you'll know before you get stranded.
