Usually a loose hall sensor wire, a failing speed sensor, controller overheating, or a battery sag under load. All four are diagnosable on site.
Hub motors sit inside the wheel and are simpler to service. Mid drives (Bosch, Brose, Bafang M series) sit at the bottom bracket and drive the chain, offering better hill climbing but more complex service.
Hub motors, often yes. New bearings, new hall sensors, and sometimes new phase wires bring them back for a fraction of a new motor cost. Mid drives are usually swap only.
$200 to $600 depending on brand and system. Bosch and Brose are the most expensive, hub motors on Rad and Aventon are the cheapest.
