eBike Brake Pads: When to Replace Them (And Why It Matters More on an eBike)

MaintenanceFebruary 19, 20265 min read

How to tell when your eBike brake pads are worn, why they wear faster than regular bike pads, and what to replace them with.

eBikes weigh 50–80 lbs and routinely hit 20+ mph. That means your brake pads are doing roughly double the work of a regular bike's pads — and they wear out faster.

Signs your pads are worn

Why eBike pads matter more

On a 30 lb road bike, worn pads are annoying. On a 70 lb eBike going downhill in Encinitas or Carlsbad, worn pads are dangerous. Stopping distances grow quickly with worn pads and added mass.

What to replace them with

For most North County eBike riders, we recommend sintered pads.

Get it done right

Bedding in new pads correctly is critical — skip it and you'll get glazed pads that never stop well. We handle the full swap and bed-in during a mobile visit.
