eBike Maintenance Schedule: Weekly, Monthly, Yearly

A practical eBike maintenance schedule from a North County San Diego mobile mechanic: what to check before every ride, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly.

An eBike does not need constant work, it needs consistent work. The problem is that most owners either do nothing until something breaks, or they read a generic bicycle guide that never accounted for a motor, a battery and twenty extra pounds. This is the calendar version, the one we actually give customers in Carlsbad and Encinitas.

The short answer

Check tire pressure and brakes before every ride, clean the bike and lube the chain weekly, check bolts, pad thickness and battery contacts monthly, look at the drivetrain and cables every three months, and book a full professional tune-up once or twice a year. Riders near the coast should shorten the cleaning and drivetrain intervals.

What this guide covers

Before every ride

This takes under a minute and prevents most of the calls we get.

Weekly

Clean it, gently

A rinse with low pressure water and a wipe down beats a pressure washer every time. High pressure water drives grit and moisture past seals and into bearings, connectors and the motor. Dry the bike after washing, especially around connectors.

Lube the chain

Wipe the chain clean, apply a bicycle specific lubricant, let it sit, then wipe off what is on the outside. A wet looking chain collects grit, a clean and lightly lubed one lasts. Never let lubricant get on the brake rotors or pads.

Set tire pressure with a gauge

Thumb pressure is not a measurement. Use a gauge and stay inside the range printed on the tire sidewall. Our eBike tire pressure guide goes deeper on picking a number for your weight and riding.

Monthly

Every three months

Drivetrain wear

Chains stretch. A worn chain quietly destroys the cassette and chainring, and on an eBike it happens sooner because the motor multiplies the load. A chain check at three month intervals is the cheapest maintenance there is. Read how often to lube an eBike chain if yours squeaks between services.

Cables and housing

Shift and brake cables gum up and fray. Sticky shifting or a brake lever that returns slowly is the early symptom.

Spokes and torque arms

Hub motor bikes put a lot of stress on the rear wheel. Loose spokes and shifted torque arms are common and worth a professional set of eyes.

Firmware and app

If your bike has an app, check for a firmware update from the manufacturer. Do it plugged in, with a good battery charge, and follow the maker's instructions exactly. If an update fails partway, stop and get help rather than repeating it.

Once or twice a year

Book a full eBike tune-up. Once a year covers a weekend rider. Twice a year is right for daily commuters, kids riding to school every day, cargo bikes and any bike living near the sand.

What belongs in a professional tune-up

Here is the honest split. Owners handle pressure, cleaning, lube and visual checks. A mechanic handles the parts where a mistake is expensive or unsafe:

If you want to know why intervals land where they do rather than just what they are, how often you should service an eBike covers the reasoning, and the 12-point tune-up checklist lists exactly what a real tune-up includes.

Coastal riders: what changes

Salt air is patient and relentless. Inside about two miles of the water we shorten the schedule:

Our coastal care guide covers the prevention routine in detail.

A schedule for families

If a student rides to school daily, tie the schedule to the school calendar. A check at the start of the year, one around winter break and one in spring keeps the bike honest, and it catches brakes before they become a problem in traffic. Parents can also look at the eBike Safety Guide for the 5-point safety check we run on student bikes.

Frequently asked questions

How often should an eBike be serviced?

Most riders do well with a full professional tune-up once or twice a year, plus their own quick checks each week. Heavy daily riders, delivery bikes and bikes ridden near the beach should be looked at more often because wear and corrosion move faster.

Can I do my own eBike maintenance?

Yes for the basics: tire pressure, cleaning, chain lube, checking that bolts feel tight and watching brake pad thickness. Leave brake bleeding, wheel truing, bearing work, motor removal and anything inside a battery pack to a professional.

How often should an eBike chain be lubed?

Roughly every two weeks for regular riding, and sooner any time the chain looks dry, sounds noisy or has been rinsed after a beach ride. A dry chain wears the cassette and chainring quickly on an eBike because the motor adds load.

How often should brake pads be checked?

Look at them monthly. eBikes are heavier and faster than regular bikes, so pads wear sooner. If a pad looks thin, the lever pulls closer to the bar than it used to, or you hear a grinding sound, stop riding and get it handled.

Does salt air change the maintenance schedule?

Yes. Within a mile or two of the water, shorten the cleaning and drivetrain intervals and check fasteners and connectors more often. Corrosion is the number one thing we find on coastal bikes that otherwise look fine.
