eBike Chain Lube: Wet vs. Dry vs. Wax (And What to Use in Coastal San Diego)

MaintenanceMarch 26, 20264 min read

Which chain lube actually works for eBikes near the coast, how often to apply it, and the mistakes that destroy drivetrains.

Your eBike's chain is doing more work than any regular bike chain — motor torque plus your pedaling. Lube matters.

Wet lube

Stays on through rain and humidity. Best for coastal commuters in Cardiff or Encinitas. Downside: attracts dirt.

Dry lube

Cleaner, but washes off in fog and rain. Skip it if you ride near the coast.

Wax-based lube

The longest-lasting and cleanest, but requires a clean chain to start. Best long-term option for serious riders.

Common mistakes

How often

Every 100–150 miles, or after any wet ride. Wipe excess off after 5 minutes.

A worn chain ruins everything

A stretched chain destroys your cassette and chainring — turning a $25 chain replacement into a $200 drivetrain swap. We check chain stretch on every tune-up.
