COASTLINE FIX

Can I ride my eBike in the rain?

Short answer. Most eBikes are rated IPX4 or IPX5, which means they handle rain and wet roads but not submersion. Never pressure wash an eBike, never ride through standing water above the motor, and dry electrical connectors after wet rides.

Step by step

  1. Check your IP rating. IPX4 handles splashes, IPX5 handles heavy rain, IPX7 handles brief submersion. Most eBikes are IPX4 or IPX5.
  2. Avoid deep puddles. Water above the motor housing can seep past seals. Ride around, not through, deep water.
  3. Never pressure wash. Pressure washers force water past seals that handle rain fine. Use a garden hose on low, or a damp cloth.
  4. Dry connectors after wet rides. Open the battery bay, wipe contacts, and let the bike air dry before charging.
