VanMoof owners are on their own after the 2023 bankruptcy. Here are the most common S3, X3, S5, and A5 issues and how to fix them without factory support.
VanMoof owners have been in a tough spot since the 2023 bankruptcy. No official service, proprietary parts, and an app that stopped talking to servers for months. Here is what still breaks and what we can actually do about it.
McLaren Applied bought the assets and restarted limited support and parts. Some repairs are possible again through independent shops. But large portions of the bike (custom motor, battery, integrated electronics) remain difficult without OEM tooling.
Custom VanMoof rear hub is the most common failure. Symptoms range from a stutter to complete no-drive. On S3 and X3 models a bench diagnostic can sometimes recover a motor by replacing hall sensors.
VanMoof batteries are physically integrated into the frame. If the battery is dead the whole bike is down. We can sometimes rebuild the pack around the cells but the BMS pairing is delicate.
These run through the mainboard. A stuck or dead boost button often points to a bad ribbon cable at the handlebar. Sometimes fixable, sometimes not.
VanMoof server pauses knocked out remote lock, GPS, and firmware updates. As of 2026 many features are working again after the McLaren Applied revival - but not all. Local physical unlock still works on every model.
Good news: the mechanical side of a VanMoof (hydraulic brakes, belt drive, tires, wheels off the motor side) is fully serviceable with standard tools. We handle these like any other eBike.
Integrated lights run off the mainboard. If they die and the bike still runs, the light itself is usually the issue - and lights are the one part still widely available.
Can fix: brakes, tires, wheels off-motor, belt drive, chain (older models), lights, handlebar and stem, general tune-up, and many electronic diagnostics.
Cannot always fix: proprietary VanMoof motors (case-by-case), integrated batteries (limited rebuild capability), mainboard failures.
Book a mobile diagnostic. In 30 to 45 minutes we can tell you exactly what is wrong and whether it is fixable in 2026. If it is not, we will tell you straight so you can make the call on what to do next. (858) 683-6900.
