A complete summer maintenance checklist for your eBike - battery care in the heat, tire checks, brake inspection, and more. Built for San Diego weather.
San Diego summers mean more rides, more miles, and more heat stress on your eBike. Run through this checklist before peak season so you're not stuck waiting on a part in July.
Battery
- **Never leave it in a hot car.** Above ~110°F internal temp damages cells permanently.
- **Don't charge a hot battery.** Let it cool 30 minutes after a ride.
- **Storage charge: 40–60%** if you'll go more than a week without riding.
- **Inspect the contacts** for corrosion or pitting - common after winter storage.
Tires
- Check sidewalls for cracking. UV and heat dry-rot tires fast in SoCal - if you see cracks, replace before they blow.
- Top up to recommended PSI (see our tire pressure guide).
- Inspect tread for embedded glass or thorns from winter rides.
Brakes
- Squeeze each lever. Should feel firm at about ⅓ travel, not spongy.
- Inspect pads - if you can barely see pad material above the backing, replace now.
- Spin each wheel and listen for rotor rub.
Drivetrain
- Wipe and re-lube the chain. Use a **dry or wax-based lube** for summer - wet lubes pick up dust.
- Check chain stretch with a chain checker tool. Replace at 0.75% stretch.
- Shift through every gear. Adjust derailleur cable tension if shifts are slow.
Electronics
- Power on, check all display functions
- Test throttle response from a stop
- Cycle through pedal assist levels - each should feel different
- Inspect motor and controller cables for chafe or sun damage
Bolts & frame
- Torque-check stem, handlebar, seat post, rack mounts, and motor bolts
- Inspect the frame near the motor mount for cracks (uncommon but worth checking)
Beach prep
If you'll be riding the coast more in summer, also read our salt and sand prevention guide - coastal corrosion is what kills most eBikes long before mechanical wear does.
