Super 73 Error Codes Explained (What Each One Means)

DiagnosticsJune 8, 20266 min read

A plain-English guide to Super 73 error codes on the S2, RX, ZX, and Z Adventure - what each code means and how to clear it.

Super 73 error codes look scary but almost all of them point to a loose connector or a sensor that needs a reset. Here is what the common ones mean.

E01 - Communication error

The display and controller are not talking. Nine times out of ten this is the display cable at the stem. Unplug, inspect the pins for bend or corrosion, reseat firmly.

E02 - Throttle fault

The controller sees a bad signal from the throttle. Check the 5-pin throttle connector under the controller cover. On coastal Super 73s (Encinitas, Cardiff, Leucadia) this connector corrodes fast.

E03 - Motor hall sensor fault

The motor phase or hall sensor connector is loose or wet. Disconnect at the rear dropout, dry, dielectric grease, reconnect.

E04 - Overvoltage

Battery is reporting too high a voltage - usually a BMS glitch after a full charge. Ride for 10 minutes to drop voltage, and the code typically clears on its own.

E05 - Overcurrent

You pulled more amps than the controller allows, often on a steep hill in La Costa or Carmel Valley in high gear. Downshift, cool down, restart.

E06 - Motor temperature

The motor is overheated. Stop, let it cool 20 minutes, and reduce assist on long climbs.

E07 / E08 - Controller fault

Hardware fault inside the controller itself. Usually a failed MOSFET after a water intrusion event. This one needs a replacement, not a reset.

Clearing a persistent code

Power off, remove the battery, wait 60 seconds, reinstall. If the code returns immediately, the underlying fault is still there - do not keep riding.
